"Terrifying" voice phishing: New bot steals your voice in 60 seconds!

In more recent biometric privacy news: an unsettling demo showcases how incredibly easy “voice phishing” has become.

Aman Ibrahim created TerifAI (as in “terrify”), a bot that can clone your voice after only a minute or so of conversation. Ibrahim's educational demo shows that tech is now at a point where bad actors could train a voice bot from a brief phone call.

It’s an incredible demonstration of the rapid development (and growing threat) of voice cloning AI, and an example of why the need for biometric voice redaction is becoming more urgent. It’s also a place where the general public (including our users) may be unaware of the risks.

User research recordings are often full of biometric information, including minutes or hours of spoken audio.

The solution we explored in our recent video redaction demo was using AI to replace users’ voices with synthetic speech. As part of that work, we compiled a list of self-hosted voice replacement tools.

Current voice replacement tools introduce their own issues, but our tests showed that they can be a viable option in certain cases. And a lot better than letting your users get voice phished.
